THE SAFETY CENTER
The Safety Center offers child safety assessments to help parents identify safety hazards in the home. Also offers a variety of low-cost safety products including security locks, carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms, baby safety gates, bike helmets, and more.

The Safety Center also provides education on the correct use and installation of child safety seats and seat restraints. The Safety Center sponsors periodic child safety seat checkups, a certified technician will help parents and caregivers learn how to install and use their child restraints properly and will check for correct installation of child safety seat, damage, recalls, and size and age appropriateness. Child safety seats are distributed for those meeting income requirements.

The Healthy Birth Initiative program addresses two vital public health services: maternal-child health and reducing health inequity related to low-birth weight and infant mortality in the African American community. Services include home visits, health education, and support groups from pregnancy through the child's second year. Major focus is to involve the father or father figure in the health of the family. Also offers reduced-cost car seats, as well as certified assistance in installation.

Dedicated to reducing preventable injuries in children by providing education, training, and a variety of childproofing equipment, safety gates, helmets, and protective gear at below-retail prices.

The Tom Sargent Safety Center offers a weekday car seat inspection station by appointment at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Certified child passenger safety technicians are available to inspect car seats and provide hands-on advice. Low-cost car seats are available for purchase for those who qualify. Can connect families to local car seat and child safety resources if they are outside of the Metro area.

Portland Metro only: Can do virtual car seat inspections.

The Kohl's Foundation, in partnership with DCH Tom Sargent Safety Center, is supporting a Safe Sleep Program. Through the Cribs for Kids Program, cribs and accompanying sheets are available at a reduced cost for qualifying low-income families. The goal is to help families provide a safe sleep area for their child to reduce SUID and other accidental, sleep-related infant deaths. Halo Sleep Sacks and Swaddlers are also available for purchase.

Families can also bring their own car seats to be inspected.
