Provides an opportunity for families to build and buy their own homes. The houses are sold at no profit to homeowner families, who provide sweat equity labor to help build the houses.

Eligibility: Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident who has not owned a home in the past 3 years who meet income guidelines and have the ability to make a mortgage payment (steady income and appropriate credit history). Must also be able to commit 500 hours of sweat equity.

FEES: Households are responsible for a closing fee of up to $3000. 0% down payment for closing costs and a 0%-interest mortgage (0% APR). Mortgage lengths vary depending on income; Habitat adjusts the length of the mortgage so that the monthly mortgage payment (which includes taxes, insurance, and condo fees, if applicable) is no more than 30% of the homeowner’s gross monthly income at the time of sale.
