The purpose of the Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) initiative is to avoid unnecessary criminalization of mental illness and extended incarceration among veterans by ensuring that eligible veterans in contact with the criminal justice system have access to Veterans Health Administration (VHA) mental health and substance abuse services. The VJO can assess needs and identify appropriate resources, refer and link qualified veterans to appropriate services, and liaise between VA and courts, attorneys, and community partners. The VJO cannot provide legal adcice, perfom forensic psychological evaluations for the cours, accept custody of a veteran, or guarantee VA program acceptance.
